My wife and I are leaving for Alaska again on July 26, 2009. Our trip route is I 29 North to Winnipeg, Canada, west on Canada 1 to Regina, NW on Canada 11, NW on 16 to Edmonton, Canada 43 to Grand Prairie, Canada 2 to Dawson Creek. At that point the Alaska Highway begins a MilePost 0. We will then continue though British Columbia and Yukon Territory. A 2 day stop in Whitehorse, and then on to Tok, Aklaska where we plan to see our friends Award Winning Alaska Folk Music Singer, Dave Stancliff ( he performs nightly at Tok Campground next to Fast Eddie's Restaurant). Then on to Fairbanks, we need to be there on August 10 to help a friend set up their newly remodeled Audiology Clinic. After the 19 we are headed south with our associate Dr. Matthew Taylor so he and his wife can experience the "Last Frontier" If anyone would like to tag along or just like information about this trip, just e-mail wtriplet@centurytel.net. We will return to the lower 48 when the weather starts to turn bad.

Ooohhh, I'm jealous! How about stopping in St. Joe on your way out of Missouri and picking us up to go with you? (Just kidding, of course.) My husband and I have been talking about a trip to Alaska for a couple of years, but other stuff always seems to get in the way. It sounds wonderful, though! Have a great trip!
Hello from Will & Charlene Triplet. We planned our 1st trip for 2 years and then health issues developed & we realized that we were on borrowed time on this earth. In January 2007 we said we are going to Alaska and nothing was going to stop us. We had so much fun and relaxation, made several new friends in Alaska, Austrailia, Scotland and Germany and enjoyed the cool summer nights and 60-70 degree daytime temps we have decided to return. If you want to make the trip here are a few stats that will help you in your planning. From June 1, 2007 to September 1, 2007 our expenses for EVERYTHING was just under $10,000 and we stayed in excellent campgrounds every night. When you figure that cost for 90 day R&R it's a bargin. Just remember, enjoy llife while good health will allow you to travel...everything else can wait
Thanks for your reply! Our constraints are a little different. I just got accepted into grad school, for an online Masters degree, so I need good internet connectivity on a pretty regular basis for that (as well as our more usual internet addiction). I've heard that can be a problem even with a Verizon AirCard (which we have) in Canada and Alaska. But I certainly agree with you on the carpe diem thing! In the 1-1/2 years since we bought our house in St. Joe we've been here just about 5 months total. The rest of the time we've been coast to coast a couple of times, and no intention of stopping that any time soon.
My wife and I made the trip to Alaska a few years ago when one of our boys was an exchange student at the UoA-Fairbanks. It was a great trip, but we should have left the pop-up trailers home. We had a slide-in truck sleeper, which is where we spent 80% of our time when not in motels. We left our New Mexico home on 30 April and were back by 18 May. The travel time was too fast, but we had other commitments.
I finished an on-line Masters' degree in 2007. You are right, you need good connections and lots of time. However, you can work things out so you can get away for a week or two. Many campgrounds -even the National Parks - have good connections. My classmates and I found that the on-line schools tend to provide better support for the students. Many of the students work full time and sometimes work or Life get in the way. Best wishes on your efforts.
I'd love to join you, but I can't this year since it isn't in my vacation planner. My wife and I went to Alaska a few years ago, but everything was still frozen. We left on 30 April from our home in Las Cruces, NM and drove to Fairbanks. We had a lot of experiences, but the strangest was learning to shower with the "Loonies." :) (coin operated showers in Calgary). The Canadians are extremely nice and we plan to make another trip. I want to take a month driving up, a month to drive around, and then another month to return. Of course, it is hard to do this while I am still working, but I plan to retire in a couple of years and then I'll have the time.
Save driving and enjoy your trip.
