We are seniors with our first RV and planning a first trip. I am anxious to make sure it is a great experience for the both of us. We live in central VA and are thinking somewhere cooler for a trip in late July or early Aug. Maybe New England area. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We are somewhat fit and love the outdoors, animals,(domestic and wild) and local color and foods. (especially seafood) We will be traveling with our two springer spaniel kids and will look for places that they will be welcome.ANY IDEAS ??? Judy O

Hi Judy,

We are newbies too, (got our RV in October, '08 and so far have just gone for weekend outings.) We are taking our first two week vacation the last week in July/first week in August to Bar Harbor, Maine and then Lake George, NY. We will be taking our two Cairn terriers with us, so it sounds like we have some things in common! I think you would love Maine, if you don't mind traveling so far. Acadia Park is beautiful and you can do lots of hiking there. Maine is also supposed to be very dog friendly. And you can't beat Maine for a great lobster dinner! Good luck making your decision!

Thank You for a wonderful idea, sure sounds like a winner to me. Judy O
Judy,
Before you go anywhere, you need to "CAMP" at home first. Load what you think you will need, then spend the weekend in your RV. Keep a tablet & pencil handy so you can make notes of what you like, don't like, and other items you want to add. For example, on my 5th wheel (also known as a 5er), I plan to add a small box with cup hooks next to the door so we have a place to put our keys. I have a flashlight with a bail, so it is also hung in the box. I don't like the knife holders, which are behind the range, so I plan to make a knife holder to attach to the wall near the range, but out of the way. I also found I needed a towel rack; I found one that is very portable and inexpensive at one of the discount stores.
I learned this trick with my first camper, which was a pop-up trailer. We bought it new in 1990 and sold it last year. My wife and I have the 5er and are planning to buy a newer model of slide-in truck camper for weekend trips. We'll do the same thing for the new camper. I've been camping all my life and I plan to continue for the next 40 years; after that, I'll see. Enjoy yourselves and check for the other websites which may have the information you need to really enjoy your camping/RVing.
Thanks for the great ideas. We did take two weekends with the new RV to NJ to visit our kids and found some snags. and some things that we will do differently next trip. We are already thinking we cheeped out and should have gotten a larger coach. But our Roadtrek SS Agile is so easy to drive and can go anywhere & is easy on fuel. We have decided to go to Tennessee for our first real trip. I want to see the Great Smoky Mts. and hear some good ole hokie Bluegrass Mountain music. Happy Trails to you and thanks for taking the time to reply. Judy O
if you are going to tn. i live 100 mi. west of nashville check out some of my pic. where i camp just 7 mi. down the road from my house , if you are interested in coming here let me know. ps i have firewood.also. check out my pic. in the pic link on home page. bc.
We just returned from Maggie valley, NC last week. Temp was in the 70s and as low as 50 at night. There are numerous CGs in the area (Waynesville or Cheeroke). Try more than one CG but stay a week at least at each CG.
