what and when do I buy?
retirement is 5 years from next month. wife and I want to travel, maybe 12 to 15 nascar races per year, and just regular traveling. present home mortgage will end at retirement time (5 years or earlier if I dont but motorhome and double up some payments. we will be new to that lifestyle, need to know what to look for, what to stay away from, etc, My present situation would allow me to spend up to $ 25,000 if I purchase a used unit now, so it could be paid for when I retire. the on-line searching I have done basically tells me that the $25,000 budget would buy me a 2001 to about 2004 class c depending on what it has for features, I need advice, do I buy now? do I wait? what kinds of questions do I ask when looking at motorhomes? Thanks in advance for any advice, and I you know where I can buy a good motorhome please let me know @

JUst read your What And When do I buy article on My Rver,I follow The world of Outlaws sprint cars and im semi retired with a class "A" 35ft.For the money you are talking and the econmy the way it is now you should be able to get a good deal on a good class "C" or even an "A"" gas coach. Things you need to look for is there nuff storage,no leaks.mechinaly sound and safe,rubber is not cracking and splitting.It may have good tread but if the side walls are starting to split and check could cause a blow out..If possiable get or look at the service records on the RV to see the track history.My self I tend to lean towards the private owners versious the dealers..Alot of time you can get xtras by going that way also. You should have some kind of ideas as to what you and your wife want it layed out like.If your going to stay in it full time you will find that you wont get your home and everything into it.Sounds like you will be towing,so you will need to have motor nuff to pull what you have and the torgue to get up the hills.There are some good articles and books out a person can read and get ideas.Also go to some of the RV shows and take in the seminars,take a list of ???? you want anseward.I know I havent given you much advice,its really hard just to say this one is the best and this isnt..I would buy now my self..GOOD LUCK ---RON

Thanks, I will be doing a lot of research, asking alot of questions, thanks for the advice on private owners too.
I dont plan on towing, I will be carring a couple of 50 cc scooters, licensed and registered, no motoer cycle license needed for 50cc and lower, and they are very easy to get around with. Just have to wait till I find the right motorhome, and then start using from time to time, then wait for my final 5 years of work , then retire, and hit the road.

We visited different dealers and RVS Shows and then rented a Class C before we purchased. The right size, floor plan, and storage is important. Other upgrades can always be added on at a later time if you feel them necessary. We also wanted a dealer with a good service department since we purchased new and wanted to take advantage of warrentee repairs is needed down the line. I might add, a dealership and a manufaturer that would survive the recession, which at that time was a leap of faith. We purchased in February of 2009, right in the middle of winter and the recession. I feel we got a great deal and even had choices on models and fabric on the interior. If you buy used, make sure you check out all the systems and run water and check for leaks etc. Even if the tires look good, check out their age and replace if necessary. Since February we have put almost 6 K miles on the RV and next week it is going in for winterization and storage. We hope to take off again in March.
