We are going to be going on a long rv trip, starting in Jan. 2009. We are going to Ca. and from there to Florida, we plan on staying in Florida until the weather gets nice, and then we are going to travel through the south. We will probably be gone 4 to 6 months. Any good suggestions of any kind for being on the road that long?

Wow! I only wish I could be on the road for that long! You pose a good question and I look forward to reading some of the suggestion. What part of Florida will you be staying in?
Sue,
I'm a guy and perhaps the hardest thing I've ever done is supress that hunter gatherer instinct I was supposedly born with. Yunno how a guy will go into a store and search out what he needs, and then leave? Well, it can be the same in RV travel. We start out in San Diego and somehow my wife determines the stars are claiming its become time to head for Las Vegas, and I then mechanically drive straight through because thats the goal, missing everything in between, It was only after stopping halfway to Seattle and turning back some 400 miles to see the Grand Canyon with our grandaughters, I can't tell you how frustrating it was for me, But after thinking about this and then listening to my wife (who never once before said she wanted to stop here or there for anything except maybe ice cream) tell me that there were dozens of things and places along the way she would've liked to see that we never did because of me. It occured to me that I was missing out on one of the primary reasons we got the rig in the first place. I actually had to phsically teach myself how to reestablish my thinking. It's still not easy, as a guy, it will probably always be "divide and conquer" for me. But nowadays, the "call of the road" takes two to initiate. This is something you'll have to work out between the two of you,
If you'd like to save quite a bit of money on your travels.....who wouldn't .....then join one of the 50% discount RV Park organizations. I'm not a salesman for any of them, but we joined Passport America (passportamerica.com) and in the first weekend we stayed at one of the listed parks, it paid for the membership. We've saved 100's of dollars with these discounts. The parks are nationwide, some only allow the 50% off-season, and some all year round. Just check the website and it maps out all the parks in each state and gives details on each park concerning the discount they offer. Every park is different, so make sure you find the best deal. Some only offer 1 night discount and some are unlimited!

Another way to save is boondock a few nights a week in Walmart parking lots while traveling. Just make sure you park as far from the store entrance as possible.

Have fun!

Mark
Hi Holly, We will be staying at the base in The Florida Keys. I really can't wait, I know we are very lucky to be able to do this.

Hi Mark, Thank you for yor suggestion on the RV park, but we will be staying in mostly military bases. The one in Florida is right on the watwer and beautiful.

Good for you! Our friends in Colorado Springs let us stay at the Air Force Academy RV Park when we are in the area. What a magnificent park! Absolutely gorgeous situated in the pines. The price is right, too! I figured you had a place to stay in Florida...I was just thinking about your trip to and from. I'm sure there are plenty of bases along the way to spend the night.
Thanks for the tip on the colorado springs rv park, we are planning to get to colorado also. Do you take a lap top with you and if so who do you use to get service?
Sue,
I use Verizon, and so far we've had good luck at the military parks at Canyon Lake and Chorpus Christie in Texas, and Monterrey Pines in California and Ft. Lewis out of Tacoma Washington. And I heartily agree with you about using Military camps if your long term touring. Check out Canyon Lake when your in the Central Texas area, it's awsome
Actually Sue, we take 2 laptops! (We work on the road and travel to trade shows all year long doing cooking shows and telling everyone about the advantage of waterless and greaseless cookware) Our internet connection is vital to our survival on the road and we also use Verizon. They have different types, and at present we use the USB port plug in. We have found excellent coverage with them.

Mark & Sue,
I wouldn't be surprized if our paths didn't inadvertantly cross from time to time. Do you do the Texas 3 step? (DFW, San Antonio & Houston?)

Hi Ron,

Not at present...We do AZ, CO, NV, UT, and a little in CA.
I've done a few shows in both AZ as well as CA with the MH, but up untill recently I've not had a lot of inventory and the company I work for has preferred that I fly in and out. That is probably going to be changing this year, and I honestly am looking forward to it. There's a larger time committment for sure, but it's also alot more comfortable (at least for me). I don't do hotel rooms well on a consistent basis, and hours of tradeshow life require a different diet thats hard to find in a restaurant.
