I saw this question posted on the wall by Chenista and thought it would be better to address it here. She asked..

What type of jobs are the most profitable on the road? I want to go full-time RVing but will need to subsidize my current income to do so. Any suggestions?

I just want to say that "workamping" is sometimes misconstrued. There is nothing special about workamping other than the fact that we live in an RV of some type. Any job that could be performed by a non-workamper could also be done by a workamper. In fact, if you have a job now, and decided to sell your house or move out of your apartment, and move into your RV, then you would be a workamper.

Rv-Dreams.com is the only site I know of that lists actual financial data by a full-time RV'er. I would recommend you take a look at Howards data and try to come up with your own spreadsheet with your numbers. That should allow you to make an informed decision.

HEY DAN:RON Story here and i was wondering how long you have been a full timer and have you had any real for say problems related to being a full timer?? Next question is how much do you actually travel around? I know i just read your comment above,But if you travel around alot it seems lik it would be harder to secure a job than if you stayed in one place for lets say four months or so.IM going to be thinking about trying to move around like a snow bird or stay gone long nuff to relax and enjoy life than head back to like a home front.IM a truck driver so i dont think i would have to hard of time trying to find maybe a part time driving job to pickup some change.THANKS FOR YOUR TIME
Hi Ron,

We started full-timing in Dec 2007. We do our traveling between jobs. We like to find a job for the summer in one location, and then a winter job in another location. In between jobs is when we travel to see family. We plan our travel around our next job location to save on expenses.

From what I have seen, employers look for workampers who can make a commitment, usually 3 months. But I have seen jobs advertised that allowed one month stays. I would agree that if you can't make a commitment it will be harder to find work.

As for problems related to full-timing...we did a lot of reading and asking questions and I think we minimized most of our concerns. Mail was one item, so we joined Escapees and use their mail service. So far it has worked out perfectly. Banking and paying bills...we set everything up to be deducted from our bank account. And all bills are sent electronically instead of paper. Medical has not been a problem as I am retired military and our insurance allows us to make one phone call to change our primary care giver to a local doctor. Prescriptions can be a problem if written by a doctor from another state, getting refills is a problem and we haven't figured out a good fix for this yet (other than starting over with another doctor).
Hi Dan,

Is it different to transfer a prescription from pharmacy to pharmacy when in a different state? I know one pharmacy will transfer to another and a major pharmacy is easier to transfer from one to another. I never thought about the state to state.
So far we have been able to call our primary care doctor and get refills from wherever we currently are located. The doctor has complained that he needs to see us before he will refill again. But the local pharmacies have filled them with no problem.

We should have gone to see him before we left, and we won't make that mistake again. Recommend if your leaving the area for a long trip, visit your doctor before you leave and let them know you will be out of the area and get your prescriptions squared away before leaving.

Note that we have very little medical needs/prescriptions so I am no expert on this stuff. And we have only been full-timing for 19 months so we don't have a long track record. There may be others on the forum with more experience that can share how they have made out while on the road.
I am a contractor and move from state to state and sometimes country to country. I have an account with SAM's and other discount stores. My prescriptions are in their computer and when I need something I drop off my request, they check the computer and give me what I need. Pretty straight forward.
Steve
